Summer Reading Program 2024

The Pennsauken Free Public Library invites all to participate in our 2024 Summer Reading Program - Adventure Begins At Your Library.

We'll be offering special activities, events, and prizes for readers of all ages from July 1st  - August 10th. The program is always free to both register and participate in. Take a look at our calendar for details about each event, including registration information where applicable.

Wish Upon a Star: Celebrating the Musical Magic of Disney

Monday, July 1st 6:00 - 7:00 pm
(All Ages) A sing-along piano concert featuring classic Disney songs.  Lyrics will be provided.  Feel free to wear your Disney ears, clothes, or costumes

 

Adventures in Storytime

Tuesdays at 10:30 am July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, August 6 
(Ages 0 - 6) Preschool Storytime in six of Pennsauken’s parks. Park names and addresses will be in the “Adventure Storytime Passport”. Get your passport stamped at each storytime and get a treasure box prize.  Bring a chair or towel to sit on.

 

Tween Art Workshop

Wednesday, July 3rd 2:00 - 3:00 pm
(Ages 8-12) Artist Susan Mauloni from Art Time LLC will do a guided art project using various art mediums.  

Seating is limited to the first 17 tweens.

 

Summer Pokémon Swap

Saturday, July 6th 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
(All Ages) Calling all Pokémon fans! Come show off your collection, swap cards with fellow collectors, and enjoy snacks and Pokémon activities.

 

Disability Pride Month Film Screening

Saturday, July 6th 2:00 pm
(All Ages) Dance Together is a family-friendly film that follows Holly, an injured dancer, and Alex, a deaf poet, who meet by accident and support each other. Dance Together explores deaf culture, friendship, teamwork, and acceptance.

 

Disney Color Club

Monday, July 8th 11:00 am
(All Ages) Coloring, dot to dot, color by number, dot markers, teen dot to dot & coloring, adult coloring all with a Disney theme.  All supplies provided.

 

Summer Graphic Novel Discussion

Monday, July 8th 6:00 pm
Teens and Adults We’ll discuss Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus (Volume 1 collects episodes #1-25). This smash hit and critically acclaimed series gives the Hades and Persephone myth a romantic modern update. Senior Dance Class with Sandra Fortuna

(Seniors/Adults) Local dance instructor Sandra Fortuna leads seniors through this fun dance class. 

 

Maker Camp

Wednesdays, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm July 10, 17, 24, 31
(Grades 2-8) PFPL's Maker Camp will be held on Wednesdays, 11am-1pm. Campers can bring a lunch or a snack. Check the below dates because depending on the week, there will be a different project to appeal to every camper’s unique interest.

Registration is not required; however, the camp is limited to 20 kids per session.

Stop Motion Animation Workshop

Thursdays, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm July 11, 18, 25, August 1, 8 
Participants will learn the basics of stop motion animation using tablets, LEGOs, and will work with team members to write, develop, and film an animated short featuring music, voice-overs, sound effects, and credits.

Popcorn and Pages (Tween Book Club)

Friday, July 12th 2:00 - 3:00 pm
(Ages 9-13) Popcorn & Pages is a new monthly book club for tweens ages 9-13 where we’ll talk about the featured book and have book-themed snacks and activities at each meeting. For our first meeting, we’ll discuss Lincoln Peirce’s Max & the Midknights. Max wants to be a knight! Too bad that dream is about as likely as finding a friendly dragon. But when Max's uncle Budrick is kidnapped by the cruel King Gastley, Max has to act...and fast! Joined by a band of brave adventurers--the Midknights--Max sets out on a thrilling quest.

Adventures in Local History 

Saturday, July 13 10:30-11:30 am
OFF-SITE at Burrough-Dover House
9201 Burrough-Dover Lane, Pennsauken, NJ
(All Ages) Take a tour through Pennsauken’s fascinating past with local experts at one of the township’s historic sites and enjoy a walk on the interpretive nature trail to Pennsauken Creek. 

 

Tail Waggin’ Tutors 

Saturday, July 13th 12:00 - 1:00 pm & Saturday, August 3rd 2:00 - 3:00 pm
(Ages 6+) Practice your reading skills or just spend some quiet time with our therapy dog Oliver. 
15 minute sessions.

My First Book Club

Saturday, July 13th and 20th 2:00 - 3:00 PM
(Ages 7-9)  A book club for kids 7-9 years old! We will read Dragon Masters (#1): Rise of the Earth Dragon, have snacks, and do an activity at each meeting. The first five registrations will receive a copy of the book for free.

PlayDoh Playtime

Monday, July 15th 10:00 - 12:00 am
(Ages 0 - 6) Enjoy free playtime with PlayDoh and PlayDoh tools! Using PlayDoh is a sensory experience that develops your child’s hand muscles and fine motor skills.  

 

Adult Game Afternoon with Game Friendzy

(Seniors/Adults) Bernadette from Game Friendzy will lead adult and seniors through this fun-filled evening of games!

 

Cedar Run - Hunters of the Night Sky

Friday, July 19th 11:00 - 11:45 am
(Ages 6+) Join us for an introduction to birds of prey!  We will observe their unique characteristics, their place in our ecosystem, and how they adapt to succeed in the wild.  Program is limited to first 50 participants.

 

Adventures in Art: Pour Painting

Friday, July 19th 1:00-4:00 pm
(Teens & Adults) Local artist Alicia Hayes will lead this workshop using this popular technique with acrylic paints. Registration is required and this program is limited to 10 participants.

Kid Yoga

(Ages 6 - 10) Join Ms. Jennifer from Small Wonders Yoga for a relaxing yoga session with a focus on self-calming techniques for children.  Bring a yoga mat or borrow one of ours. Class limited to the first 30 students.

 

Chocolate Olympics

Monday, July 29th 4:00 - 6:00 pm
(Ages 8+) Celebrate the 2024 Summer Olympics by competing in chocolate-y challenges.

 

Harry Potter Party!

Tuesday, July 30th 6:00 pm
(Adults) Trivia, snacks, and fun filled chats about all things Harry Potter. 

 

Jungle Jeep Drive-In Theater

Friday, August 2nd 11:00 - 11:45 am
(Ages 2 - 5) Enjoy a show from your very own (cardboard) jungle jeep as we transform the library into a drive-in theater!  Jeep seating is only for 2 - 5 year olds.

 

Puzzle Olympics

Friday, August 2nd 2:00 - 3:00 pm
(All ages) Compete in the Puzzle Olympics with your team (3-5 members). Each team will be given a 300 piece puzzle. The first team to finish the puzzle wins a prize basket!

Summer Graphic Novel Discussion

(Teens and Adults) We’ll discuss Melissa Jane Osborne & Veronica Fish’s The Wendy Project. In this fresh take on Peter Pan, teen Wendy crashes her car with her two brothers in the backseat. When she wakes in the hospital, she is told that one brother is dead, but she insists he is alive and with a flying boy.  Using a sketchbook from her therapist, Wendy negotiates fantasy and reality as those around her begin to resemble characters from Neverland.

Pirate Treasure Hunt

Wednesday, August 7th All Day
(Ages 0 - 12) Pick up your treasure hunt sheet from the Youth Services Desk and see if you can find all the items scattered around the library!  Turn your sheet in for a pirate treasure box reward!

Popcorn and Pages (Tween Book Club)

Friday, August 9th 2:00 - 3:30 pm
(Ages 9-13) Popcorn & Pages is a new monthly book club for tweens ages 9-13 where we’ll talk about the featured book and have book-themed snacks and activities. This month, we will discuss Wretched Waterpark (Sinister Summer, Book One) by Kiersten White, a mystery series that's spooky, creepy, and filled with gothic twists! Meet the Sinister-Winterbottoms: brave Theo, her timid twin, Alexander, and their older sister, Wil. They’re stuck for the summer with their Aunt Saffronia, who doesn’t know how often children need to eat and can’t use a smartphone, and whose feet never quite seem to touch the floor when she glides—er—walks. When Aunt Saffronia suggests a week pass to the Fathoms of Fun Waterpark, they hastily agree. But something mysterious is happening at Fathoms of Fun, and it’s up to the twins to get to the bottom of it.
